Why Chewing Ice Isn’t Harmless
Many have this habit of chewing ice especially from the drinks, but it isn’t harmless as you think it is. Is it possible that you can resist them?
You may wonder how chewing ice can be harmful, well…
1.If It Is Compulsive Habit
If it is such a habit, you may damage your health without even knowing it.
Chewing ice compulsively is called pagophagia, and it is a variant of pica eating disorder in which a person craves for non-food items like hair, glue, dirt, paper, drywall, paint, chalk etc), and can be a sign of other disguised serious physical, mental and emotional illness.
2.Is Chewing Ice Bad For Your Teeth
Of course it is.
Chewing ice is a habit that a lot of people have, and are completely unaware of its harmful effects, until they feel the first signs.
Chewing it will wear and tear off the enamel of teeth, resulting in micro-fractures, which can potentially cause the tooth to break.
This habit is especially bad for those who wear braces, or have just done some dental work. And for those with sensitive teeth- chewing ice will most likely worsen and not numb the pain.
This could become so severe, it may be needed a root canal therapy.
And not to mention how much it will cost you, so you better lose the habit.
3.It Could Be A Symptom Of Anemia
Sometimes compulsive ice chewing is considered to be a symptom of anemia – iron deficiency. A study have shown that for those with insufficient iron, eating ice is acting like a cup of strong coffee.
People suffering from anemia often report feeling fatigued and foggy-brained due to their bodies inability to produce enough oxygen-carrying hemoglobin.
4.You May Provoke Cavities
The dental damage may go beyond destroying the tooth enamel. It may affect already cracked and chipped teeth, problems with fillings and crowns, and even giving you a sore jaw from forceful chewing.
Many people have extremely sensitive teeth to hot and cold drinks, and foods as well – therefore, eating this icy pleasure can make you prone to cavities even more.
5.And Gum Infections Too…
By having this habit, you may hurt your gums when a sharp edge will stuck while crunching. It is rather hurtful and it may cause infection and other serious gum issues.
When knowing this, why do you still chew ice?
If you need to crunch something between your teeth, rather take a carrot, apple chunks or a celery stick, and if you are not up to it- chew a gum.
At least you’ll have a fresh breath and may satisfy the need of crunching something.
6.Are Emotional Issues The Cause Of It
Pica syndrome can be sign of some emotional issues like stress, OCD or a development disorder since early childhood.
If you want to investigate the root of your problem, and anemia isn’t the issue, consider to have cognitive behavioral therapy which can help overcome your pica syndrome.
7.Are You On A Diet
If you are dieting, than you’ve restricted yourself to food, and chewing ice keeps your mouth moving, trying to fool the brain.
Be careful, avoiding food and replacing it with ice may lead to serious eating disorder. You can permanently damage your organs, bones, and even your brain, and this is something you don’t want to play with.
Your health first!
If needed, seek some professional help to resolve this issue, and also talk to a nutritionist so you’ll skip this food substitute habit, and have enough healthy calories taken.
8.Are You Concealing Stress
This is the first thing someone will ask you.
Do you hide stress by chewing ice?
Is this action releasing you from it?
Maybe it is only a habit to you, but it may be a sign of a more serious medical condition you might have.
Try to let the steam off differently. There are so many ways of doing it, without harming yourself.
9.Are You Concealing Mouth Inflammation
If you do, most certainly this is not the way to do it. You may have some nutritional deficiencies which can lead to inflamed tongue or gums, and chewing ice to ease the pain – just won’t do.
Rather go to a blood check up, determine what your body lacks of and act upon it.
Take effective treatment and try to lose this icy chewing habit once and for all.
As you can see, seeping too many margaritas and chewing ice all summer long can turn into a mouth nightmare, therefore, rather eat some ice cream chilling your mouth, than sharp and edgy ice cubes that may provoke so many gum issues requesting medical emergencies.
