How Dirty Are Public Toilets And What To Do Not To Get Infected!

Who Invented The Toilet

When you gotta go, you gotta go! Call it a toilet, a lavatory, the pot, the jar or whatever you call it – toilets are simply toilets! Have you ever wondered from where this quest begins throughout history and who invented this necessity?

Historians believe that some of the oldest toilets to use water, were developed by the Indus Valley Civilisation. Thanks to their advance thinking at ancient times, this has developed to our days today.

However, modern flush toilets appears to be an invention from Sir John Harrington, who invented a flush toilet in 1596.

Until these days, flushing toilets went through significant changes to serve their main purpose.

Modern Day Usage Of Public Toilets

As it is necessity, public toilets seems to be present everywhere but just for you to know, there are some germ safety issues you need to know before entering. Biggest danger doesn’t come only from sitting on the seat.

Public bathrooms are germ ridden places and no wonder people avoid them if they can. They’ll go there if they only need to.

Most common lurking bacteria there appears to be E.Coli, streptococcus and S. aureus. Their presence on the seat doesn’t necessarily mean they will make you sick. Why?

Because your skin acts as a very effective barrier to keep germs off, and of course unless you have some kind of open wound on your behind.

People are often wondering can they catch herpes, HIV or other STD. Science has proven that these organisms can’t survive for long time outside the human body, especially not on a cold, hard toilet seat.

For you to become infected, they need to enter either through an open cut, or sore in your mouth or rectum(which wouldn’t normally come into contact with the seat).

What About Toilet Paper Seat Protectors

Well, of course you must use them, but know that they are thin and they can tear apart easily. Try to double-fold them and place as such on the seat.

The automatically replaced plastic covers are much better, but such barriers on the seat act more as psychological than actual physical protection. What to say…

How People Act When They Are In

Some people will do anything possible to avoid touching the bathroom door, others flush with their feet, elbows, handbags – you name it, making an intense workout how to flush or open the door.

How much bacteria are lurking on the toilet seats?

There might be somewhere between 500 to a few thousand bacteria for every square cm, and all of that depending on how often the public bathrooms are cleaned.

What To Do Not To Get Infected

There are couple of common ways to protect yourself from getting any bacteria on:

If you REALLY need to go, and there is no possible way to avoid it, give yourself a little bit of extra protection by using couple of paper seat coverings if you must seat on it.

Extra Paper Protection

If there isn’t any paper seat protection, use toilet paper instead. Remove the first two layers of the toilet paper, throw them away into the toilet and put couple of layers of it before you sit.

Why to throw the first layers? Because you never know if someone before you has dropped it on the floor.

Flushing

Before you flush, close the toilet with some hand protection before you touch it.Why it is necessary to close it when flushing?

Because contaminated water will become aerosolized and the spray of it can travel upwards for about six feet and you don’t want to inhale that. And not to mention bacteria will be all over the place.

When flushing, you can use some protective barrier on your hands like Kleenex which you should to throw away in the basket. Some people use their legs to do this, but you don’t have to do gymnastics in the jar.

Washing

Many people think that toilets are most dirtiest places, but wait to see what is going on in the sink. If you just wash without any soap, you’ve transferred all that bacteria into the sink surfaces. And if you touch your face after you didn’t use any soap – say hello to germs.

You should consider the fact that very few are actually washing their hands properly-unfortunately, and that makes you open to catching some unwanted bacteria.

Drying

Public bathroom sinks have high level of contamination and it perfectly makes sense if you use a paper towel as protection to shutting the tap off.

And what if there are no paper towels and there are only hand dryers? It is OK, as long as you don’t let your face to be in the path of the airflow, because if you didn’t washed them properly, there is a chance you are going to blow aerosols from your hands into your face.

Leaving From It

Unfortunately, even if you have done everything properly, if you touch that door handle, you blow all your previous protection efforts.

Door handles of public bathrooms are incredibly contaminated, and sometimes with fecal bacteria or yeast. Not always everyone washes their hands. Yes, it may sounds disgusting, but it is true.

Use some paper towel to open the door and then throw it away.

Is It Possible You Can Always Protect

Yes it is. If you have taken into consideration all steps mentioned above, you can enter and leave public restroom safe and sound.

How Can Having A Pet Influence Our Mental Health

Pet As Our Companion

Having a pet is the best decision you’ve ever made for yourself.

Whenever you are feeling down they are there for you. Felling sad or having a bad mood will be history in your lives.

They will always draw a smile upon your face, no matter how miserable or stressed you  feel.

That’s the case with me.

My dog is cheering me up whenever I am feeling”blue”… she waives with her lavish tale and hugs me for 5 min standing on her feet whenever I come home from work.

In such moment the feelings within me are purely indescribable.

Pets are great for maintaining healthy body, mind and spirit. You wonder how? This is HOW!

They Keep You Fit

When you go outside with your pet, you are engaging with nature as well.

A simple walk is stress release exercise and doing it couple a times a day (for weekends especially) will move those loosen muscles from sitting all day long at work.

The shiny rays from the Sun and fresh air will both do so good, that you won’t even have a desire to get back home.

Exposure to Vitamin D helps fight some physical and mental conditions like depression, cancer, obesity and heart attacks. Walks are calming.

Engaging in outdoors activities gives you a natural energy boost allowing you to let off some accumulated steam. It  makes you more physically fit, enhancing your muscles and bones strength.

Some studies have shown that owning a pet can lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which makes sense since you are engaging yourself in many physical activities with them.

Pet owners have better circulation and a lower risk of experiencing major cardiac issues. Therefore, when your body is stronger, you are less susceptible to mental health issues as well.

Lessen Allergy And Asthma Symptoms

Yes, it may sound very contradictory, but it is proven that children who grow up with pets are less likely to develop allergy symptoms.

Allergies can cause people to become lethargic, apathetic and suffer from insomnia, which can make them more vulnerable to mental health issues, such as development of depression.

Also, they give the kids early sense of responsibility skills development.

Stress Reducers

One simple, warm pet cuddle can wash away all your worries – at least for a while.

They make you to focus on the moment and feel their love and necessity of being around you. Rhythmic petting or grooming can be comforting to your dog/cat, and even you.

Petting has such soothing effect.

When you connect with your pet, oxytocin (the hormone related to stress and anxiety relief), is released, helping to reduce the blood pressure and lower those pumped cortisol levels.

Pets Make You Present – Like NOW!

When you are fully engaged in the moment, you don’t think-nor for the past – nor the future. It is just you and your pet.

That unique magical moment of pure bonding.

There is nothing like it.

They Ease Your Loneliness

If you suffer from loneliness – get a pet. They are great domestic companions. Pets are intuitive creatures and will seek for you when you’re feeling down and they won’t leave you alone.

But, before you decide of having a pet at your home, make sure you can fully take care of them. Pets should not be used to fill an empty gap in your life and then to be pushed away.

They have genuine feelings as we do.

Don’t hurt those.

Know that having a dog or a cat is a long-term commitment and it’s not always easy, but if you are up to the challenge, they can provide you with so much love through the bad times and good ones too.

You Will Learn What Unconditional Love Truly Means

Seeing their enthusiasm when you walk through the door and happy tail wagging – says it all. They love you for being just YOU.

They are so happy to see you that if they could talk they would’ve told you so.

Pets just want to be around you, to love you and off course – to be loved by you.

They Make You Easier To Handle Your Isolation

Walking in dog parks creates more opportunities for socialization for both you and your dog.

Your dog makes friends quite easily and will help you to connect with new people, and perhaps set up future dog dates…Your sweet little pet can be an instant conversation starter, and also a good way to get to know more people from your neighborhood.

They Give You A Sense Of Purpose

Having a pet to care for, can give you a feeling of purpose, which can be crucial when you are feeling down and overwhelmed by negativity you have within.

By caring for your pet, or other animal in need, you are focusing on something other than yourself and your life.

Your good deeds, and your pet’s (or other animal in need), will give you a feeling of instant gratification.

And you will feel GOOD!

Doing something that is grater then you.

Just the same when you are having a kid. It becomes everything about them.

Smile Will Always Lit Up Your Face

If someone can put indefinite smile upon your face-it is your pet.

When your dog/cat does their own thing like  putting a paw up on your arm when you lie down in bed and hugs you, YES, they can make you smile, which in turn triggers your neurotransmitters to fire up.

This pet-time can level up your serotonin and dopamine, which are nerve transmitters associated with calmness and happiness.

Play,Play Play

Playing is fun.

For both of you.

Do wrestle, play catch or just run around your home, backyard or whatever is suitable. Your dog will love you so much for it.

You will both benefit from the pleasurable together time spent.

And if you feel that you can’t have such obligation of having a pet, but still wanting to so do something and feel their unconditional love – don’t hesitate to volunteer at a shelter.

There are so many animals that can still benefit from your love…

If You Use Your Credit Card This Way You Might Be Sorry!

Credit Card And Modern Living

Can you imagine yourself today not using your credit card at all?

It doesn’t matter whether it is a debit or credit one.

Modern society is pushing its use and close is the day when it will replace paper money. Still, when you use your payment card in specific ways, you should be careful since fraudulent is always present near us.

There a couple of ways you should pay attention to and if anything seems suspicious enough to you – don’t use it.

To which specific ways we refer?

On Line Shopping And Https Webs

If a website offers purchase and it is not registered as https site, think twice before putting your card numbers there. https sites use certificate that is encrypting communication between server and your computer.

The “S” is a protocol for secure communication over a computer network. It is secured authentication of the visited website and protection of privacy the of the exchanged data.

When you see a URL with “https” it means that the site is secure and it is OK to use your payment card.

credit card

Don’t E-mail Your Credit Card Number

Don’t ever do that. Hackers developed technique called “phishing”and it usually involves emails specifically designed to extract your credit card number for an unauthorized purchase.

Before you decide to click on any link, look for peculiar things like spelling mistakes, strange English language or suspicious logos.

Street Charity Approaches

Like every big city, there are a lot of fund-raising and donation projects running on the streets.

Many of them attempt to collect donations for different causes like child welfare, environment or pet care…just to mention few of them.

They usually ask for your name to attribute donation to a person but if they want your payment card number-just walk away!

People are targeted based on their emotions and empathy, but don’t “buy” it. Ask for their bank account to donate money if you want, or ask for their organisation name to check their existence on the web.

Don’t Give It Over Phone Conversation

Why? Because you don’t know to whom you are speaking to.

You also don’t know who is listening the conversation, whether someone else is on the line(attached)or, people around you.

Someone might walk away with your numbers. Don’t risk it!

How many times you have given your card number when you have ordered food?

Get the idea?

Rather pay in cash!

credit card

Don’t Overuse Your Card

Don’t get lost in using your credit card over and over increasing your debt.

Purchase in a way you can afford it-limit yourself otherwise you’ll end up paying huge interest rates on the amount not returned as installment.

Purchasing On Public Wi-Fi Network

Public Internet or any Internet without password protection is hazardous for your cards.

Why?

Because sensitive personal information like passwords, credit card number or any kind of personal data might be stolen by anyone trying to break through the network.

Wait until you are over a secure connection before laying down any sensitive information, passwords or payment card numbers.

You should delete Wi-Fi networks from any of your devices that aren’t yours, and make sure to secure your Wi-Fi connection with a unique, private password.

It is also recommended, not to use any Wi-Fi connections that are not secure, as for example coffee shops Wi-Fi, free Wi-Fi in the airport, unless you do it over a secure VPN connection.

Don’t Purchase On A Public Computer

Why it is card hazardous? Because on a public computer devices there may be installed software, for main purpose to record all of your keystrokes.

They also might contain malware combined with other tools to steal your information.

With one word, you shouldn’t use your credit card on a website you have accessed to from a public computer.

New technologies made easier for hack info thieves to act, therefore be careful where you land your credit card info!
