How Do You Organize Your Office Desk
Your office is like your second home where you spent most of the time, and you want to make it as pleasant as possible by organizing your office desk as you please.
Almost everyone has their own way of organizing their office desk, but did you know that the way you do it says a lot about the type of personality/character you have?
Below are couple of common “desk personality types,” along with their preferences and how they work well.
Find out which one you are and see how co-workers interpret your desk habits.
Many keep their family pictures on their desk, which means relationships are very important to you.
Displaying one or two of your family pictures shows that you are very close to your family, and that they motivate you to work harder (having in mind your own life goals).
Still, take it easy with exposing family photos.
You might be giving signals that you’d rather be anywhere but work.
No Pictures At All
If you are type of person that does not put any pictures whatsoever, it means that you value your privacy.
Some people prefer to keep work and home separately and keep everything on the desk strictly work-related.
This is very good and professional choice.
If you have constantly a messy (cluttered)desk, it means that you are a creative innovator.
Most often, having a messy office desk sends signals of a disorderly approach to work and life, making you appear overwhelmed and confused.
There is also some evidence that workers with messy desks are not concerned with conventional notions of how things should be done.
It doesn’t matter really as long they are good workers, and they use their desk mess to start their creativity and get the job done.
Spotlessly Clean Desk
If you keep your desk utterly clean it means you like order and rules to follow.
In case your driving motto for your desk is “everything should be in its place”, it means you enjoy order in other areas of your life as well.
This is a good one. It means you keep all your “sheep in a sheep-fold”.
However, too much tidiness may also show that you want to express your “perfect” facade to others, and you are desperately resistant to changes.
Your love for order could exceed normal behaving limits.
Reasonable clutter is preferable sometimes
Practicing Mind Games
If you have some kind of “mind games” you need to relax while on your lunch break( or whatever break you take), it refers how much intellectually curious personality you have.
Yes, everyone needs to take a quick brain break during tough workday, and if your relaxation method of choice is a small puzzle or a computer game, it shows that you enjoy working your mind in different ways, and enjoy learning new things.
This is REALLY GOOD.
Piles, and piles of paper…
Most often it is believed that an empty desk reflects an empty mind, and that some people like to operate that way, because they prefer to see everything they work on.
And what about pile makers?
Even though they may look disorganized to other co-workers, they have a mental system and know exactly where everything is.
Yes, surprisingly but true.
If you try to clean their desk just to prove this, you’ll see they can’t manage a clean desk.
Their chaos is organized in their heads and works perfectly fine.
They do get the job done – their way.
Scattered Junk Food Wrappers
Well, this can be a sign that you are depressed. You don’t notice food clutter or any other clutter whatsoever.
But you know what?
There’s a difference between being messy and being dirty. If your desk is the latter, it may be an early warning sign of depression, and most likely others with notice this much sooner than you will.
If you have been feeling down lately it’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it might be the right time to consider talking to someone and check what’s going on.
If your desk represents your personality – this one will most certainly give signal to your boss if you are capable enough to deal with work issues and under pressure, when you have too much of your own to deal with.
This behavior shows distraction, and possibility of getting fired if you don’t pool yourself together soon enough.
Hand Sanitizer and Bleach Wipes All Over The Place
If you have to many varieties of these, yes, you are definitely health conscious (or a little anxious).
Usually, having hand sanitizer and bleach wipes within your move range, isn’t quite the norm for personalizing an office desk.
Don’t get us wrong.
Being health oriented is a good thing and you’re showing your coworkers that you care about your health ,but you may also be labeled as being a bit of rigid hypochondriac.
If you do wanna have these, maybe it is better to consider moving them to your top drawer, so you can have easy access.
Funny Coffee Cup
If you have one of those with funny quotes, it definitely mean you have great sense of humor. Everybody loves a colleague who can make others laugh and make their day at the office more enjoyable.
Funny coffee cups say a lot about yourself without even saying a word.
And sometimes if you choose something a little edgier, you’re actually saying that you like things just a little out of line – but not too much.
You have great a sense of finish line, and you’re not a serious “rebel”, but you do like to have a little more rebellious fun sometimes.
Such behavior always make your day cheerful.
Flowers On Office Desk
This is something most women do, and if you’re a fan of having a beautiful vase with fresh flowers, it means you are cheerful, happy and confident person.
Fresh flowers are genuine mood booster no matter they’re a gift from a loved one, or if you just picked them up on the way to work.
Placing them on your desk shows that you’re happy and value beauty in your personal space.
Awards and Trophies
If your desk is covered with all your awards and trophies, it means you’re very goal-oriented.
For some people, their career and how well they do are of big significance, so they can define themselves.
It’s their way of feeling valued.
If you want to put your awards out in the open, it tells others that you’re a hard worker, achiever, and motivated by setting high goals.
However, if you want to have them anyway, try to limit them to just a few, as too many of them will show you are a bragger, and to tell you the truth – no one likes braggers.
You better keep them at your home.
Too Many Sticky Notes
If your desk is brightly colored with too many sticky notes with all sorts of reminders, it says you love lists.
But, be careful.
Because too many scattered sticky notes can send vibes to your coworkers that you’re disorganized, or have too much work undone.
It is always better to consolidate them to the most essential ones and keep the desk tidier.
If you have these, and you always want to have the right inspirational quote at the right time – it means you are persistent and a problem solver.
But, don’t go to far with this.
If they are literally everywhere, it can make you look insecure and with lack of confidence, and you really don’t want to leave such impression to your colleagues, neither to your boss.
Totally Empty Desk
If you like your office desk to be 100% empty – it means you love to be always in control and hold your cards well hidden.
A completely empty desk is a rare thing to see, unless you are a newcomer and this is your first day at work.
Keeping your office desk empty may signal that you prefer to control how you give information to others either about your work, either about yourself.
It may also show that you can be easily distracted, and in order to work effectively, you need to minimize any potential distractions so you can get your work done.
Desire To Have A Bigger Office Desk
If you want to have harmonious work space with lots of light and space – you have creative and artistic personality.
The best way you can get your job done is when you lay out all your”things” on your secondary work surface and let your creativity work.
Powerful Looking Office Desk
If you are one of those who want a big, bold and powerful desk – you may have an executive personality within.
Powerful office desk colors (like ebony), will give you a bigger sense of authority at your desk, and solid wood is a great material to create a sense of confidence.
Even this may seem to you innocent, the ways you organizing your desk may reveal the personality you have, and make easier to colleagues to understand what you are made of.
You can analyze your office desk right now, and see where your inner problems are : are you anxious, a bragger, a controller or you are fine tuned person.
