Hair Combing Mistakes
Everybody thinks that hair is just a hair, and what proper hair combing has to do with it? Well, it does, because with un-proper hair combing you can damage your hair.
Starting At Your Scalp
This motion of your hand goes naturally and without even thinking what you do. Most people brush their hair while still wet, not knowing that wet hair is highly vulnerable.
And if you can’t ditch that habit, at least do it gently.
If you start combing your hair from the roots, you may scratch the scalp and cause irritation. Also, brushing the hair from the scalp down, may cause breakage as you test your hair elasticity up to a certain point.
You make unnecessary traction on both – the hair and follicle.
By combing from the scalp down, you create a possibility to gather tangles together, creating large knots which are hard to straight them right.
If you get to this point, make small hair section and comb through, starting the ends and then work your way up.
By doing this, you will save your hair from possible breakage.
Gentle With Your Hair Line
As you already know, you have to be gentle with combing wet hair, and it is also important not to make any damage while combing around your hair line.
As these hairs tend to be finer and more delicate then the rest, you better treat them right if you don’t want to end up in a hair clinic trying to solve the damage you’ve made.
If you are brushing too rough around this area, it is most likely you will pull hairs out of their follicle, resulting in temporary hair loss, and that is something you wouldn’t like to happen, right?
If you are stubborn, and you do this repeatedly over a longer period of time, the affected hairs may stop growing back permanently, which will lead to a condition is known as alopecia.
Alopecia areata usually begins when clumps of hair fall out, resulting in totally smooth, round hairless patches on the scalp or other areas of the body.
In some cases the hair may become thinner without noticeable patches of baldness, or it may grow and break off, leaving short stubs.
Although the new hair is usually the same color and texture as the rest of the hair, sometimes it is very thin and white.
About 10% of people with this condition may never regrow hair back and it all depends on :
- family history with this condition
- consequence of other autoimmune disease
- having allergies
- excessive hair loss
- excessive hair brushing damaging follicles
As hair is an important part of appearance and beauty, hair loss can result in feeling unattractive and can influence your mental state(in a way).
Therefore, be careful how you treat your hair and learn why proper hair combing is so important.
Start From The Ends First
The right way to comb wet hair to avoid damage, is if you start from the ends and do it gradually.
Section by section.
If you have long hair, split it in three sections and work out each section separately, until you reach the stage you want – the roots.
By doing it this way, you gently and mindfully ease-out any interlocked hairs or hairs that you find as you go along. And when finally you reach the scalp – it will become much easier.
The mid parts and ends are already knot free, which means less damage caused by inducing tugging and pulling. Do this gently if you want to avoid split-ends and have to cut more hair than you would like.
Hair is a delicate matter.
If you want to have beautiful, healthy, long and shiny hair – there are hair rules(or recommendations) to follow.
Use Leave-In Conditioners
Thank God these exist. They made each women’s life easier, as their formula is great to nourish and smooth areas that need repair the most.
If you have plenty of spare time, you can always make homemade hair masks which work absolutely brilliant, but if you are always in a hurry, leave-inns can do the job quite satisfactory.
Do this weekly and you won’t regret it.
As your face, your hair needs some pampering too, you know?
Forget Wrapping Hair In A Towel
I bet when reading this line your eyebrow jut went up thinking – huh??
The way you dry your hair matters!
Wrapping your hair in a cotton towel can cause to get extra knotty, which forces you to be even more aggressive when hair combing.
When using a towel, you just need to squeeze gently out excess moisture. Before combing, put on some detangling spray and comb through gently.
In summer time, you can leave it to dry naturally, but if you want to blow dry it anyway, don’ t get too close to the hair strands if you want to avoid extra dryness.
Play gently with it.
The Power Of Detangling Spray
Before combing wet hair, it is good idea to spritz some detangling spray. It acts same as leave-in conditioner, making it easy the comb to go through.
These sprays usually contain conditioning agents that reduce friction and smooth the cuticle, and will typically provide some “slip” to the hair, allowing your detangling brush to slide right through your strands easily.
What types of brushes can be used?
All stylists agree that using wide-toothed comb is good choice for after-shower hair taming. You should look for a model that’s specifically designed for knocking out knots.
While a comb may be best for waterlogged locks, when it comes to styling and blow-drying strands, the right brush can make all the difference.
Synthetic Bristle Brush
They are made from nylon and are best choice for super thick hair types.
Natural Bristle Brush
They are usually made of boar bristles, are super soft, and help to distribute your hairs natural oils all the way.
Mixed Bristle Brush
This is perfect combination for having shiny and detangled hair. Combining these two into one product is something that most hairstylist use.
This is an every day brush, which can be used while blow drying. It helps to flatten the hair and gives a lot of shine.
The vents here are speeding up the drying time, since the hot air is coming from all sides around strands.
Note: Make sure your hair is almost 80% dry before you use any brush.
If you are up to big volume and some curls, then, this is the brush for you. They come in many different sizes. If you are using smaller round brush, your curls will be tighter.
Use the ones depending what you want to achieve with your hair style.
This brush is used for purposely creating knots, in case you want to create an extra volume. But be careful with it if you have thin and brittle hair.
It has a long handle to create sections while making hairstyle. Its fine teeth are great for hair smoothing.
As you can see, there are variety of combs and brushes maintaining your perfect hairstyle, just be careful when hair combing, as you don’t want to damage that perfectly long, shine and well groomed hair you have.
