Tips And Tricks For Fresh Flowers
Having a vase full of fresh flowers is almost an instant mood booster. They are the most beautiful gift from our Mother Nature for us to enjoy. Unfortunately, fresh cut flowers don’t last long even we would like them to.
Different types require totally different care and the question is : How to make them last longer? There are couple of ways to make that happen and each tip given – shows different results on flowers.
Add regularly water in a vase if you want to help flower arrangements stay fresh and last longer. Having more flowers in arrangements will increase their need for water supply.
Make sure to check the water level daily and add some more if necessary. There are types of cut flowers that need more water than others.
Tap Or Filtered Water
Using tap water is OK for flower arrangements. Still, usage of filtered water can be applicable for certain types of flowers like Orchid or Peace Lily.
Trim The Ends Of Stems
Trimming the ends of stems will make flowers to soak up more water. If you put stems out of water, you need to trim them because in a few seconds they slightly dry and they need to be re-cut before entering water again.
For that matter, use sharp scissors and cut an inch off the stems at angle, rather than straight through. In this way you will help flowers to have better access to water.
It is always better if you cut them under water not to allow any air embolism.
Sterilize The Vase
Clean vase matters when it comes to flowers. Before you put them in a vase, make sure you have disinfected it with bleach and water. Simple soap and water should work, but use bleach if you want to be extra careful.
Apple Cider Vinegar
We all want to keep our fresh cut flowers as long as possible, and there are few good methods to do so. One of them is to mix 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and 2 tbsp of sugar with water before adding flowers in. Make sure you change the water (with mix of vinegar and sugar) every few days if you want to prolong your flowers longevity.
Vodka For Flowers? Hm, peculiar…
If you want to preserve your flowers to last longer, then you should minimize the risk of bacteria growth. For this matter- Vodka is your solution. Bacteria don’t thrive in alcohol.
Add few drops of vodka to vase water with 1 teaspoon sugar. Change water every other day, doing the same procedure with Vodka and sugar.
Aspirin Is Not Just For Headaches…
This is a very good way to keep roses and other cut flowers last longer. Simply put a crushed aspirin in water before you add it to the flowers. Don’t forget to change the vase water every few days doing the same procedure.
Cut flowers will last longer if you simply add 3 drops of bleach and 1 teaspoon sugar in 1 liter water. This will also keep vase water from getting cloudy and inhibit the growth of bacteria. Don’t overdo with bleach.
Sugar Is Not Only For Cakes
For this matter, you should dissolve 3 tbsp of sugar and 2 tbsp of white vinegar, per 1 liter of warm water. When you fill the vase, make sure the cut stems are covered by 3-4 inches (7-10 centimeters) of the prepared water.
The sugar nourishes the plants, while the vinegar inhibits bacterial growth. You’ll be surprised how long the arrangement will stay fresh.
Home Made Plant Food
This is a basic home recipe you can try. Mix together 1 quart water, 2 tbsp of lemon juice, 1 tbsp of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon bleach. Pour into the vase and see the result later.
When leaves on stems are below water level, they will quickly rotten and promote mold growth. It is best to remove all leaves from the stems below the waterline if you want to stop the rotting process.
Where To Keep Them
Try keeping them in cooler areas if you want to preserve them for a longer period. Keep them away from direct sunlight, heater vents and entry doors.
It is not harmful to try some of these methods and see which one works the best. And if you have used any other methods to keep your flowers looking fresh, feel free to share them with us.
