Ego Without Mask
Why is EGO so hard to explain or to describe?
Well, ego is difficult to define because it isn’t always one specific thing. It is actually made up of many different beliefs that a person acquires over it’s entire life.
Those beliefs can be diverse or even contradictory.
To further complicate the situation, each person’s ego is different. If someone can clearly identify and describe all the parts of their ego, and what it drives them to do, you might not get a good description.
The challenge of becoming aware of what your personal ego looks like, becomes more difficult because our culture doesn’t reward us for directing our attention inward and noticing such things.
How To Notice Your Ego
It is difficult to notice it because it hides behind opinions that appear like true. You can get a glimpse-by noticing certain thoughts, similar to those as described.
You Always Want More
Do you always have to have the best, and be the best?
Ego is never satisfied and is always craving more. It lives from fear that there won’t be enough, or that things will run out for you.
You will always be in search of something to fill this void.
To change this – find things you can appreciate and be grateful for instead!
You Always Have To Be Right
When ego is in charge and conflict arise, the situation just gets even worse.
This type of thinking is narrow-minded and leads to judgment and criticism. When we have to be right all the time it suppresses creative potential and leaves many opportunities unseen.
You can be happy…..or you can be right.
It is your decision!
You Are Overwhelmed By Stress
Do you always have to be in control?
Ego will always communicate the need for control and safety. If there is uncertainty, then the ego shouts “Danger!” and rings the alarm that impending trouble is appearing on the horizon.
It focuses on survival and becomes easily concerned when things aren’t going “the right way”.
Stress and emotional discomfort are sign that you’re out of alignment and being victimized by these false warnings and defensive thinking.
You Are Taking Everything So Serious
Do you have a hard time taking a joke?
Ego can easily steal your joy by filling you with worries, concerns, regrets and embarrassment. It does struggle with anything that threatens the self-concept and damages all notions of self-worth. It usually is pointing out all the negativity.
Be aware when ego is clouding your joy!
You Always Have To Win
Competitiveness has serious disadvantageous when it takes away from the potential for mutual benefit and expansion.
Ego always thrives of being the best.
Achievement and accomplishment are important pieces of self-realization.When this distracts us from the bigger picture of love, happiness and peace of mind, then competitiveness becomes an intruder.
How To Overcome Your Ego
You can do it in so many ways, but here are some suggestions you can implement.
Focus On Generosity
Practice some giving away of your time, energy and resources. This will squeeze the egos focus from “mine” and “having more”.
Practice Unconditional Love
When you are able to love someone or something despite what’s in it for you, then, the ego has been transcended.
Show love unconditionally, and stop asking, “What’s in it for me?”
Practice helping others and recognize how you can be of service.
Be observant about how you can help others, and do something kind for someone each today. It will make you feel better.
Spend time and get to know someone who is different than yourself.
When you start noticing that judgments are emerging, JUST STOP there and find value in other people uniqueness and background.
Respect the difference!
Live In The Present
Ego has a hard time staying satisfied in the moment.
Be careful not to get stuck in the past or worrying about the future. Be mindful of your breath, your environment and your five senses – ALWAYS!
