What Is Empathy
Empathy is, at its simplest, awareness of the feelings and emotions of other people. It is a key element of Emotional Intelligence, the link between self and others, because it is how we as individuals understand what others are experiencing as if they were feeling it themselves.
Empathic persons are often quiet achievers. They have a tendency to openly feel what is outside of them more, than what is inside of them. This can cause to ignore their own needs.
In general, an empathic person is a non-violent, non-aggressive human being which tend to lean more towards being the constant peacemaker.
Other People Feelings
Empathic persons are more inclined to pick up another’s feelings and project it back without realizing its origin in the first place.
They can develop an even stronger degree of understanding ,so that they can find peace in most situations. The downside in this is that an emphatic may bottle up emotions and build barriers sky-high, not let others to know their inner (thoughts and/or feelings).
Elements of Empathy
- Understanding Others
- Developing Others
- Having a Service Orientation
- Leveraging Diversity
Those who do this:
- Tune into emotional cues. They listen well, and also pay attention to non-verbal communication, picking up subtle cues almost subconsciously.
- Show sensitivity, and understand others’ perspectives.
Developing others means acting on their needs and concerns, and helping them to develop to their full potential. People with skills in this area usually:
- Reward and praise people for their strengths and accomplishments, and provide constructive feedback designed to focus on how to improve
- Provide mentoring and coaching to help others to develop to their full potential
- Provide stretching assignments that will help their teams to develop
Having A Service Orientation
Primarily aimed at work situations, having a service orientation means putting the needs of customers first and looking for ways to improve their satisfaction and loyalty.
People who have this approach will ‘go the extra mile’ for customers. They will genuinely understand customers needs, going their way to help meet them.
In this way, they can become a ‘trusted advisor’ to customers, developing a long-term relationship between customer and organization. This can happen in any industry, and any situation.
Leveraging diversity means being able to create and develop opportunities through different kinds of people, recognizing and celebrating that we all bring something different to the table.
Leveraging diversity does not mean that you treat everyone in exactly the same way, but that you tailor the way you interact with others to fit with their needs and feelings.
People with this skill, respect and relate well to everyone, regardless of their background. As a general rule, they see diversity as an opportunity, understanding that diverse teams work much better than teams that are more homogeneous.
People who are good at leveraging diversity also challenge intolerance, bias and stereotyping when they see it, creating an atmosphere that is respectful towards everyone.
Empathy, Sympathy And Compassion
There is an important distinction between empathy, sympathy and compassion.
Both compassion and sympathy are about feeling for someone, seeing their distress and realizing that they are suffering. Compassion has taken on an element of action that is lacking in sympathy, but the root of the words is the same.
Empathy, by contrast, is about experiencing those feelings for yourself, as if you were that person, through the power of imagination.
Types of Empathy
Psychologists have identified three types of empathy: cognitive, emotional and compassionate empathy.
- Cognitive empathy is understanding someone’s thoughts and emotions, in a very rational, rather than emotional sense.
- Emotional empathy is also known as emotional contagion, and is ‘catching’ someone else’s feelings, so that you literally feel them too.
- Compassionate empathy is understanding someone’s feelings, and taking appropriate action to help.
Empathics are sensitive to TV, videos, movies, news and broadcasts.Violence or emotional dramas with shocking scenes of physical or emotional pain inflicted on adults, children or animals can bring an empathic person easily to tears. They simply cannot justify the suffering they feel and see.
Passion To Help Others
You will find empathics working with people, animals or nature, with a true passion and dedication to help them. They are often tireless teachers and caretakers for our environment and all within it. Many volunteers are empathic and give up personal time to help others without pay or recognition.
Empathic person may be excellent storyteller due to an endless imagination, inquisitive minds and ever-expanding knowledge. They can be old romantics at heart and very gentle. They may also be the “keepers” of ancestral knowledge and family history. Not surprisingly, they may have started or possess a family tree.
They have a broad interest in music.Lyrics within a song can have adverse, powerful effects on empaths, especially if it is relevant to a recent experience. In these moments, it is advisable for empaths to listen to music without lyrics, to avoid playing havoc with their emotions!
They are just as expressive with body language as with words, thoughts, and feelings. Their creativity is often expressed through dance, acting, and bodily movements. Empaths can project an incredible amount of energy portraying or releasing emotion.
Easy To Talk
People and animals are attracted to the warmth and genuine compassion of empaths. Regardless of whether others are aware of one being empathic, people are drawn to them as a metal object is to a magnet!
Empaths are often problem solvers, thinkers, and studiers of many things. As far as empaths are concerned, where the problem is, there is the answer as well. They often will search until they find one, only for peace of mind. This can certainly prove beneficial for others in their relationships, in the workplace, or on the home front. Where there is a will, there is a way and the empath will find it. The empath can literally (likely without the knowledge of what’s actually occurring) tap into Universal Knowledge and be receptive to guidance in solving anything they put their head and hearts into.
Empaths often are vivid and lucid dreamers. They can dream in detail and are inquisitive of dream content. Often they feel as though the dreams are linked to their physical life somehow, and not just a mumble of nonsensical, irrelevant, meaningless images. This curiosity will lead many empathic dreamers to unravel some of the “mysterious” dream contents from an early age and connect the interpretation to its relevance in their physical life. If not, they may be led to dream interpretations through other means.
Healing, Holistic Therapies And Metaphysics
Although many empaths would love to heal others they can end up turning away from being healers (even though they have a natural ability for it), after they’ve studied and qualified, because they take on too much from the one they are trying to heal. Especially if they are unaware of their empathy. Anything of a supernatural nature is of interest to empaths and they don’t surprise or get shocked easily.
An empath will go crazy if they don’t get quiet time. They just need “their”time, just to reboot themselves so they can carry on .Solitude is the best practice they can have.It is their healing process within.
Intolerance To Narcissism
Although kind and often very tolerant of others, empaths do not like to be around overly egotistical people, who put themselves first and refuse to consider another’s feelings or points of view other than their own.
Empaths are presently having a particularly difficult time, picking up on all the negative emotions that are being emanated into the world from the populace undergoing huge transformations.
It is very difficult for them picking up all the pain in the world that today exists.
