Are Celery And Celeriac The Same Thing?
While their appearances are wildly different, celery and celeriac root are very closely related botanically. Does this mean they can be used interchangeably in cooking?
The short answer is no.
Celery and celeriac are basically the same plant, Apium graveolens, with celeriac being a variety cultivated for its root rather than for its stalks (var. rapaceum).
They both have the taste of celery, although many people find celeriac to be earthier and more intense. Both can be used either cooked or raw, but in either case, their texture is widely different, so they are not interchangeable in most recipes.

Celery And Celeriac Juice
Makes 250 ml
- 100 g celery
- 150 gr celeriac
- 100 g lettuce
- 100 g spinach
- 2-3 ice cubes
- Trim the celery and cut it into 5cm lengths.
- Peel the celeriac and cut the flesh into cubes
- Separate the lettuce into leaves
- Juice the celery,celeriac,lettuce and spinach,alternating the ingredients so that the lettuce and spinach leaves do not clog the machine
- Transfer the juice into a food processor or blender,add a couple of ice cubes and process briefly
- Pour the celeriac juice into a glass and serve immediately
